Painting Steel

To paint or repaint steel, Valmour proposes different types of products mainly consisting of monocomponent and bi-component paint. Monocomponent paints are delivered ready-to-use, bi-component paints have to be reconstituted just before employing them by mixing a base and a hardener. In all cases you have to choose compatible products for each step, meaning the same type of product (mono- or bi-component) for the preparation, the finishing and , possibly, for protection.

We recommend to proceed according to the following steps:

1- THOROUGH PREPARATION OF THE SURFACE

- Rust elimination : if the surface ist rusty, eliminate superficial non adhering or crumbly rust by brushing or sanding. If afterwards there still remains visible rust residue, use the Stop Rust Converter Valmour (which deteriorates to the detriment of the rust, therefore the protection is in proportion to the quantity of product applied). Without visible rust residue, it is useless to apply the Stop Rust, you can start to paint dierectly. After sanding the metal is exposed and fragile : you need to paint it within 24 hours.

- Stripping : if necessary, eliminate previous coats of paint by brushing or sanding them or by using a stripper: Liquid Stripper for horizontal surfaces and Gel Stripper for vertical surfaces.

- Grease elimination : Apply paint only onto a clean, dry and completely greaseless surface. To eliminate grease, you can use acetone or our DILUVAL.

2- APPLICATION OF A PRIMER

The reason for applying a primer or undercoat is to prepare the surface to be treated for optimum  attachment of the paint. For certain paints this step is optional, but always more efficient. There are 2 types of primer:

- Monocomponent : slow-drying, for those who aren't in a hurry: it's the ANTI RUST Primer

- Bi-component : composed of a base and a hardener to be mixed before application, this product represents the best quality available. More expensive but containing twice the anti rust protection power, the ANTIRUST EPOXY Primer is a professional product used in the industrial sector.

3- FINISHING

This is the actual painting, which will give the final appearance to the surface. Once again, there are 2 types of paint:

- Monocomponent : these paints are of excellent quality-price ratio, less expensive and ready to use.

Choose between 3 different appearances:

    - matt: use the TRIPLEMAT

   - satiny : use the TOLEMAIL SPECIAL IRONWORK

   - shiny : use the SUPER SHINY LACQUER or the AGRIVAL. The latter is faster-drying, and ideal for painting tools, gates, agricultural engines , girders...

- Bi-component : composed of a base and a hardener to be mixed before application, this product represents the best quality available used by the professionals in the industrial sector. Choose between 2 finishes:

  -  VALPOX for its high mecanic resistance. This is the ideal epoxy paint for farming implements and those exposed to chemical agents. VALPOX can also be mixed with silica to obtain a non-slip floor.

  -  OMNILACQUER for its high resistance to bad weather conditions. This polyurethane lacquer is ideal for surfaces exposed to bad weather, in particular in a marine environment.

4- PROTECTION :

This step is optional and allows to complete the finishing by adding a protective varnish to increase the life of the paint, and thereby prolonging the intervals between renovation. Depending on the previously applied finishing paint : mono- or bi-component, you have the choice between:

- a monocomponent varnish:  MARINE VARNISH LOUIS XIII

- a bi-component varnish: OMNIVARNISH. This varnish will also allow you to diminish the shine of the OMNILACQUER, because it is available in mat, satiny and shiny.

Remarks :

 - Always choose a similar product: either monocomponent or bi-component, for each step of the procedure.

- Average cost: including primer and paint:

. for monocomponent products : approx. 7 € / m2/coat

. for bi-component products :   approx.14 € / m2/coat.
